i completed a 24 hour comic, hooray!

in the process, the following comparisons to my comic were made by various people:

x-men (plot)
harry potter (plot, characters)
dresden codak (art)
blankets (art)
firefly (characters, specifically river)
scott pilgrim (characters, specifically scott)
cave story (plot)

and in my own head i was sort of consciously-but-not-intentionally drawing inspiration in art style from kate beaton and rene engstrom, though i'm certainly not claiming to do it as well as they do.

so, yes, it is a vast amalgam of cliches and common tropes, ranging from zombies and robots to shallow love stories and "being different". it is also shittily drawn. nonetheless, it is 24 pages long, and i made it in less than 24 hours (actually more like 20 -- we started at 12:30pm on saturday, and i finished at 8:19am sunday).

directory listing here, or you can load it all by clicking the cut.

The panel with the girl in line with the robots is great.

time is passing more quickly than you think? e.g. the top 2 panels feature different girls. the black panel was supposed to indicate time passage but mostly this page was sort of a cop-out.

No I get passage of time but I don't understand what happened in literally the last panel after he teleported while kissing the girl.

Ohman, you've satisfied my comic-reading needs for a year of Sundays. This is awesome.

I had difficulty reading some of the text. Were you in a hurry lettering because you had 24 hours? Did you storyboard and draw this in 24 hours, or have the story formally written already?

no storyboarding or planning of any kind was done before the clock started ticking. sometimes i would get stuck for a long time just trying to figure out where to take the story.

could you tell me on which pages the text is illegible? i can try to clean up the scans a bit. it was not so much that i was in a hurry lettering as that my hand was getting so sore that tensing the muscles enough to do clean lettering (and clean lines in general) was painful.

I like this lots and want to see more.

It's certainly a touch pastiche-y, but there is lots and lots of Chrisamavoice that comes though and I like that.

I will add to the references to other things in that the teleport-itis reminds me of the time traveller's wife (BOOK, NOT MOVIE) (haven't seen the movie) (the book was really good, though.)

Sorry I wasn't there, argh,
but I hope you and others will be up for other creativity gatherings, 'cause I would like to do that more coming up.

Cool stuff! I really like the idea of an academy for people with weird afflictions, and the story and art are both really nifty.

I can't believe I never commented on this when you posted it in the first place. I loved it then, and I love it now!
